Summary

A deliciously sly, compulsively readable tale about greed, power and the world’s most devious family。

When Alana Shropshire’s seventy-six-year-old father, Ed, starts dating Kelly, his twenty-eight-year-old nurse, a flurry of messages arrive from Alana’s brothers, urging her to help “protect Dad” from the young interloper。 Alana knows that what Teddy and Martin really want to protect is their father’s fortune, and she tells them she couldn’t care less about the May–December romance。 Long estranged from her privileged family, Alana, a hardworking single mom, has more important things to worry about。

But when Ed and Kelly’s wedding is announced, Teddy and Martin kick into hyperdrive and persuade Alana to fly to their father’s West Coast island retreat to perform one simple task in their plan to make the gold digger go away。 Kelly, however, proves a lot more wily than expected, and Alana becomes entangled in an increasingly dangerous scheme full of secrets and surprises。 Just how far will her siblings go to retain control?

Smart, entertaining and brimming with shocking twists and turns, The Opportunist is both a thrill ride of a story and a razor-sharp view of who wields power in the world。

I literally could not put this book down! It’s deliciously readable and darkly fun! The characters are all interesting and relatable and the story is rich with many twists and turns。 I couldn’t believe the last twist at the end。 Marvelous! This book would make an excellent Christmas gift and would also be an amazing beach read。 Clever and compelling。 Bravo!

I loved this book。 I just took it with me on a beach vacation to the Dominican and ended up reading it in 2 days。 I was hoping to make this book last but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down,Ms, Friedman's style is so easy and flowing yet the plot and characters a very substantial and all that transpires through the twists and turns in this rollercoaster ride of a story, still remains totally believable。 If you enjoy reading, I highly recommend that you get this book。 I loved this book。 I just took it with me on a beach vacation to the Dominican and ended up reading it in 2 days。 I was hoping to make this book last but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down,Ms, Friedman's style is so easy and flowing yet the plot and characters a very substantial and all that transpires through the twists and turns in this rollercoaster ride of a story, still remains totally believable。 If you enjoy reading, I highly recommend that you get this book。 。。。more

I don’t know what I was expecting from this book but it wasn’t this。 Definitely check the content warnings on this one first but overall a good read with some unexpected twists and a likeable main character。

I flew through this book。 While the concept isn’t new, a potential gold digger trying to get money from a rich old man, there was something that held my interest。 While I had no idea where this was going from the start, I figured out the twist long before the reveal。 But I still enjoyed the read。I’ve been on a roll of cat and mouse thrillers, and I liked this one because I wasn’t always sure if there was a cat and mouse and if there was, exactly who was involved。 I was not a fan of any of the ch I flew through this book。 While the concept isn’t new, a potential gold digger trying to get money from a rich old man, there was something that held my interest。 While I had no idea where this was going from the start, I figured out the twist long before the reveal。 But I still enjoyed the read。I’ve been on a roll of cat and mouse thrillers, and I liked this one because I wasn’t always sure if there was a cat and mouse and if there was, exactly who was involved。 I was not a fan of any of the characters, but I think that was intended。 As I made my way through the book, I kept changing my mind on who I thought the title was referencing。 All of the characters are quite the opportunist at one point or another, but who was the most opportunistic? This does read more like a family drama than a thriller, but with so much at stake and going on, it really does fit the bill of a psychological thriller。If you love fast paced melodrama, you will love joining in the game of cat and mouse。 。。。more

The Opportunist is what I would consider domestic suspense, but it also leans into the psychological thriller genre。 Yes, there is a difference between the two, although they run pretty close overall。 Whichever this one is, it's a gritty, engrossing story that keeps you guessing。 Chances are if you think you have it figured out, you probably don't, and the next big twist will prove it。 At least, that was my experience。 And the characters? Honestly, I can't say that I liked a single one of them。 The Opportunist is what I would consider domestic suspense, but it also leans into the psychological thriller genre。 Yes, there is a difference between the two, although they run pretty close overall。 Whichever this one is, it's a gritty, engrossing story that keeps you guessing。 Chances are if you think you have it figured out, you probably don't, and the next big twist will prove it。 At least, that was my experience。 And the characters? In Elyse Friedman's twisty novel, The Opportunist, Alana is a single mom raising her young daughter who has a type of muscular dystrophy。 She is estranged from her family- her wealthy industrialist father Ed and brothers Martin and Teddy, who work for the family business。 She was very close to her sister Lillian who died years ago。 She receives a call from her brothers asking her to come home to stop their father's wedding to his 28 year-old nurse Kelly。 The brothers are convinced that Kelly is In Elyse Friedman's twisty novel, The Opportunist, Alana is a single mom raising her young daughter who has a type of muscular dystrophy。 She is estranged from her family- her wealthy industrialist father Ed and brothers Martin and Teddy, who work for the family business。 She was very close to her sister Lillian who died years ago。 She receives a call from her brothers asking her to come home to stop their father's wedding to his 28 year-old nurse Kelly。 The brothers are convinced that Kelly is a golddigger who will end up with all their father's billions and they will be cut out。 Alana could care less about who her father marries, but her brothers offer her a lot of money to help them expose Kelly, and Alana, who works at a domestic violence shelter, could use that money to make her daughter's life easier。Reluctantly she agrees, and off she goes to the wedding。 She meets Kelly and sees that Kelly appears to be very devoted to Ed。 An attempt by the brothers to pay off Kelly backfires, and although Alana believes that Kelly loves her father, Alana needs the money for her daughter and continues to help her brothers。There are so many twists and turns in the plot, and trying to figure out who is playing whom will keep the reader turning the pages。 I liked reading about Alana's life with her daughter and the ostentatious displays of the obscenely wealthy family's lifestyle (especially the scenes set on the super yacht) are crazy。 It is no wonder that Elyse Friedman is a screenwriter, her novel would make an intriguing movie。There is a big reveal late in the book that I didn't particularly like, but the final twist did take me by surprise which I do like when reading a psychological suspense novel。 Exactly who is the opportunist in this story?
